The Nigerian government may direct a
change in the package of ‘Sniper’, an agro-chemical that has increasingly
become a choice killer for persons contemplating suicide. The National Agency
for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) said it is partnering
with other relevant bodies on this as part of plans to discourage the use of
Sniper as a tool for suicide. This is in response to calls for a check on the
proliferation and ease of access to Sniper in markets and streets across the
nation. According to Vanguard Newspaper, the Director General of NAFDAC,
Christiana Adeyeye, said Sniper containers “could now be made very difficult to
open, or may be turned into sprays rather than the liquid contents it is known
for.” The suicide rate has increased in Nigeria with Sniper among the agents
popularly used. Notable among the reported incidents is that of a 400-level
student of the Department of English and Literary Studies, University of
Nigeria, Nsukka, Chukwuemeka Akachi. There was another case of a pastor in a
popular Pentecostal church in Abuja who recently committed suicide after
consuming the deadly substance

NEWS
Good Morning, my name

……The English Football League have released the fixtures for 2019/2020 premiership season. The first week of the league season will begin with Manchester United playing host to Europa League winners, Chelsea FC. …..The FIFA Under-20 world cup
competition hosted by Poland has come to an end. Ukraine fought back from a goal
down to defeat South Korea 3 goals to 1 in the 2019 final at the Lodz Stadium
in Poland last Saturday evening. Few expected Ukraine and Korea to be
battling it out in the final match of the tournament. After all, the Ukrainians
had never advanced beyond the last 16 before, while Korea’s best finish was
fourth and that was way back in 1983.
……In the build up to the fourth coming
Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, Nigeria has dropped three spots down from 42nd

her 3rd position on the continent. The latest ranking also shows that
Belgium, France, Brazil, England and Portugal occupies 1st to 5th
positions while Croatia, Spain, Uruguay, Switzerland, and Denmark occupies 6th
to 10th positions respectively.
That is all from the Sport Desk…………… Thanks!
My name is Charity Peter, the
commentary today is “TOBACCO USE AND ITS DANGERS ON OUR HEALTH” written By:
Samuel Allen Zenke and Franca Lanshima.
Tobacco use can have
disastrous consequences on our health. Nevertheless, many people decide to
ignore the risk and go on smoking. According to the most recent statistics,
nearly one out of every five youth in Nigeria is a smoker.
More than 4,000
chemical substances are present in cigarette smoke, including at least 50 that
can cause cancer. These substances include arsenic, tar, and carbon monoxide.
In addition to these toxic products, cigarettes also contain nicotine, which
causes physical and psychological addiction to tobacco.
Smoking is among the
leading causes of death around the world. According to the Nigerian Bureau of
Statistic-NBS, every year, nearly 13,000 people in Nigeria die due to the
consequences of smoking. It is estimated that a smoker is three times as likely
to die between the ages of 35 and 70 as a non-smoker. In addition, half the
people who smoke at age 20 and don’t quit, die of a tobacco-related disease
Clearly, tobacco have
a major impact on the lungs. An estimated 85% of cases of chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD) and of lung cancer are caused by smoking. About a third of all cancer cases are due to
smoking, including Cancer of the Esophagus, Cancer of the Mouth, Cancer of the
Uterus, Bladder Cancer, Stomach Cancer, and Pancreatic cancer.
Tobacco use is also a
significant cause of heart disease. In fact, smoking considerably increases the
risk of heart attack and stroke. Smoking can also affect fertility. In
addition, smoking during pregnancy can adversely affect fetal development, for
example, increase the likelihood of premature birth and low birth weight.
Apart from the
serious health consequences mentioned above, smoking can also impact your
everyday life. It can affect your breathing, causing coughing and shortness of
breath. It increases the risk of respiratory tract infection, including
bronchitis. All of these occurrences can significantly reduce your quality of
life.
Smoking can also
affect you in many other ways, for example: it alters your senses of smell and
taste, and reduces your ability to perform physical exercise and impacts
adversely on your physical appearance. Smoking also condemns you to a life of
repeatedly trying to suppress feelings of withdrawal and exposes you to a
greater risk of depression and anxiety, and affects your relationships with
family, friends, and colleagues. Smoking also entails considerable financial
costs, both at the personal level and for the health system.
If you are a slave to
cigarettes, please know that it is never too late to stop smoking. With help
and a good action plan, everyone can quit smoking for good. If you achieve this
objective, you’ll notice its benefits in the first few days. Over time, your
risk as an ex-smoker for developing tobacco-related diseases falls to the level
associated with lifetime non-smokers. Make the right choice for your health and
quit smoking now!
